The Bridgewater State University Chorale and Chamber Choir present an evening of works connected to themes of Good Friday, including Margaret Bonds' recently rediscovered masterwork, Simon Bore the Cross. With lyrics by Langston Hughes, Simon Bore the Cross profiles the story of Simon of Cyrene, an often overlooked figured in the passion narrative who many speculate was a dark-skinned man from Africa. The musical foundation of Bonds' piece is on the African-American spiritual, Never Said a Mumblin' Word, which she quotes throughout. The concert will include several other spiritual settings and pieces with themes relevant to Bonds and Hughes' collaboration.
