STEEPLE SOUNDS

April/May 2026

We are a Christian community of people who are reaching out to our neighbors,
at home and abroad, sharing our faith and our resources.

Central Square Congregational Church, UCC, of Bridgewater, Massachusetts is an open and affirming
church. No matter who you are, or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here.

Please note: This is an April and May combined issue. The next issue will be June.

From the Desk of Rev. Beth

Rev. Elizabeth Stotts, Pastor

It feels like winter lingered way longer than usual this year. The bone-cold days stretched on, the gray skies seemed reluctant to give way, and for many of us, it wasn’t just the weather that felt heavy. It has been a hard season in more ways than one—personally, collectively, even spiritually. There are winters that pass quietly, and then there are winters that ask something of us. This one, for many, has been the latter.

And yet—spring comes.

Not all at once. Not in a dramatic overnight transformation. But slowly, gently, persistently. The light lasts a little longer each evening. The air softens. Small buds begin to appear where, not long ago, everything looked lifeless. A bird chirps.

Spring doesn’t ignore the winter that came before it. It grows out of it. There is something deeply faithful about that.

In our life together as a church, we honor the truth that seasons of hardship are real. We don’t rush past them or pretend they haven’t shaped us. Like the long winter, they leave their mark. But our faith also reminds us that those are not the only stories we carry.

As a Christian community, we are a people of resurrection. Spring invites us to notice the quiet ways new life is already unfolding among us. In moments of connection. In acts of kindness. In the courage it takes to keep showing up—for one another, for our community, for the work of love and justice. It may not feel like everything is in full bloom yet. That’s okay. Early spring rarely does. But something is stirring and perhaps this is the invitation before us: to be gentle with ourselves as we emerge from a long and difficult season, and to remain open to the small, holy signs of renewal all around us.

As a church, we step into this new season together—carrying both the weight of what has been and the hope of what is still becoming, trusting that even after the longest winters, life finds a way to rise again.

Grace and peace to you in this season of new beginnings.

In Christ,
Rev. Beth

Don’t forget to bring your spare change for the Coins for Kids Church collection ! This helps to pay for Kids Church supplies and teaching materials.

We normally collect it on the first Sunday of the month, but feel free to bring it on any Sunday!

April is a time for many of us to get outdoors and enjoy the warmer weather and all the beauty of Spring. However, some of us still like to gather after worship for coffee, treats and fellowship time. If you are one of those people, we need your help in hosting coffee hour for a Sunday in April. The sign-up sheet will be posted on the Fellowship Hall bulletin board nearest the kitchen and the dates available are April 12th, and the 26th.  Or you can contact the church office. Thank you in advance for helping out.

May should be bringing us even warmer weather which draws us outside for fun and leisurely activities. However, we can still gather after worship for hot or cold drinks, treats, and conversations. I will post a sign-up sheet in Fellowship Hall (or you can contact the church office) and see what we get for responses to helping host a Sunday in May. Dates most likely will be May 3, 10, 24, and 31st. These are subject to change.

I will be stepping down from coffee hour coordinator at the end of May. Thank you to the many hands and hearts that have come forth to help prepare, host, bake, and clean up. Your willingness to help out is greatly appreciated. I would like to pass the coordinator duties on to someone else, so please approach me at any time to talk about what I have done. There is no right or wrong and new ideas are always welcomed.

Giving Statements

If you need a statement of your giving to CSCC for 2025, contact CSCC Treasurer at treasurer@csccucc.com.

The Strengthen the Church (STC) Offering reflects the shared commitment of people across the United Church of Christ to cooperatively build up the UCC. Conferences and the national setting equally share the gifts given by members and friends through their local congregations. The funds raised support leadership development, new churches, youth ministry, and innovation in existing congregations. By your generosity to this offering, you build up the Body of Christ.

As God calls our congregations to be the church in new ways, your generosity will plant new churches, awaken new ideas in existing churches and develop the spiritual life in our youth and young adults.

The Strengthen the Church offering will be received on Sunday, May 24 (Pentecost).

Send your brief, one-line message to the church office at office@csccucc.com. If it's received by the 20th of the month, it'll be in the next Steeple Sounds. If it comes after, we'll save it for the next one.

What's new with you?

The Central Square Thrift shop is open for business.  Happy Spring! Hopefully we'll be able to see some of our crocuses and daffodils any day now. For a little special indulgence this Easter and Spring season, come and check out our beautiful collection of vintage glass. We also have a nice collection of children's clothing. Our half price closet is full and waiting to be picked over.

Do you need a puzzle? Or a good book? We have it all and we are always getting wonderful surprises. So please come and visit us.

We would love and welcome new volunteers, too, so  come and join the party. Stop by the shop, contact the church office, or chat with one of us if you’re interested in volunteering.

Lynn, Connie, Sandy, Jane, and Gail

PS - The shop will be closed on April 8 & 11 to make way for the Women’s Guild Spring Rummage Sale, which will be held on the 11th.

April Fool’s Day, April 1st is the date of the next Women’s Guild and Fellowship meeting in Fellowship Hall at 6:30pm. We will start with a business meeting to talk about the future of the Guild and the time of day it should meet next year. So, come and vote your preference after we discuss the options—this will be an important meeting.

Our program to follow will be all about bees by naturalist, Judy Macioci. Hear an update on these important garden creatures! Come celebrate early spring! Reminder, bring your $40 check to reserve a seat at the May Banquet at Loon Pond Lodge in Lakeville.

Our final meeting of the year will be a celebration of the Women’s Guild’s fellowship and fundraising success to local, national, and international charities, on Wednesday, May 6. It will be held at Loon Pond Lodge at the Ted William’s Camp in Lakeville. We will have a banquet meal together of sirloin tips, baked fish, and chicken picatta with salad, sides and apple crisp for dessert! Cocktail hour starts at 5pm with the meal to commence at 6pm, followed by the May business meeting (distributing the April rummage sale proceeds) and the Annual Report. Looking forward to seeing everyone there!

Donna ONeil
President

Our hours for the Rummage Sale will be 9am-1pm the Saturday after Easter (April 11) with a Fill-a-Bag sale starting at NOON! Hope to see you there!

As I go through my daily life, I recognize and acknowledge how my day to day living impacts the world around me. I strive to have a small footprint, impacting my community in least possible way. For example – choosing not to take a trip the grocery store for one or two specialty items, making due with what I have, using innovation and creativity instead going by the book. It doesn’t always work, but being conscious of the use of gasoline and trying to coordinate errands that are in the same general direction. I will honor and celebrate our earth on Earth Day, just as I do every day, with gratefulness and respect for our planet and its creation.

Carol Chaffee

“‘Nature’ Is What We See”
by Emily Dickinson

‘Nature’ is what we see—
The Hill—the Afternoon—
Squirrel—Eclipse— the Bumble bee—
Nay—Nature is Heaven—
Nature is what we hear—
The Bobolink—the Sea—
Thunder—the Cricket—
Nay—Nature is Harmony—
Nature is what we know—
Yet have no art to say—
So impotent Our Wisdom is
To her Simplicity.

Last month in Kids Church, we journeyed through our Lenten curriculum, exploring themes of grief. While this may sound like a super heavy topic for kids, the general theme was: hard things happen, and what matters most is how we respond to them. Their compassion and care in their responses was truly inspiring, reflecting the love and teachings of Jesus in a real and meaningful way.

That journey brought us to Palm Sunday, where we explored not only Jesus’s death, but also the promise of new life. In previous years, we’ve usually focused on the events leading up to the cross, but because Easter is always celebrated in intergenerational worship, we don’t usually have the space to talk about the important part of the story... Again, if you only read up to the crucifixion of Jesus, you miss the most important part. Rebirth and new life! This year, with the help of Rev. Beth, we centered on the hope and joy of the resurrection in ways that could resonate with the kids in our church.

Going forward, as we step into the season of Eastertide, we are excited to follow the lectionary through April and May, discovering new stories and asking big questions together. Spring is a time of growth and renewal, and that energy is alive in Kids Church with both creative and joy-filled lessons ahead!

And while June may seem far away, we’re already looking forward to celebrating with our year-end party together where the kids will attempt to wreck my Spotify algorithm (if you know, you know) with an ice cream and dance party! Stay tuned for more details and enjoy the changing of the seasons! Christ has risen, Huzzah!!

Grace and peace,

Pastor report
Skipped the pastor’s report.

Treasurer’s report
Another good month, YOY from the past two years is still higher than two years ago. Doing a better job keeping to budget. Still not taking out from investments.

Carol Chaffee brought up the memorial fund topic. The Women’s guild made a memorial gift to Anne Chaffee. Carol is unclear as to what the process is and there still seems to be a gap in the acknowledgement process. Was this added to Karissa’s job description? Carol is requesting follow-up regarding that question. She is going on maternity leave. Dave and Karissa to let Jenne know when the gifts come in. Nina suggests a small policy regarding the process. Anne says that the process changes based on who does the giving and who the recipient is. Needs a central place to track the memorial gift. Two notes need to go out when a memorial gift is received - the giver and in whom the gift was given. NRC was not paying attention, they thought they may have double paid us but it wasn’t the case.

Community Engagement Report - Heather Ciaramitaro
• Magic night made about $1300. Good attendance.
• Skipping January and February potluck due to them falling on holidays.
• Pancake Supper in April
• March 13th Julia concert.
• Paint night - March 27th.
• May 2nd potato game night.
• June - Kid’s Art festival.
• Possibility to use Community Center for an event, possibility for Kid’s art. Stephanie has a connection to the Community Center.
• Dave H to help out with pancake breakfast
• Revamp activities based on congregation feedback and participation

Congregational Engagement - Carol Chaffee
• March 22nd, Stewardship Sunday. Newsletter article in March with goals. How to engage the congregation in more giving opportunities, tentatively :hear I am lord. Also discuss how to recruit more team members.
• Nametags. Graphic nametag design sheet. Options for nametag re-design. Looking into new lanyards. Natalie and Carol will work on organizing the existing board.
Perhaps have a designated location for a name tag.
• Youth Alumni emails. Sent an advent greeting. Shooting for a Lent email. Please share any youth whose emails you would like to submit.
• How to engage online worshippers. They are going to speak to Paul about outreach.
• Revamped clipboards for volunteers for readings, greeters, etc.
• Need to find substitutions for RB in the coming Spring/Summer.

Property and Finance - Dave Hanson
• No heat was due to the old furnace. It needs a new circulator. They were able to locate a new one.
• Carol to get Dave Hanson Arthur Sharpe’s phone number for linoleum replacement in kitchen.
• Get painting for ceiling upstairs. We need to find someone willing to get up on a ladder.
• Bruce Maclay will paint outside of the building where it is peeling. He volunteered to help using a step ladder and no higher.
• The thermostat in the Food pantry is all set.
• Snow removal seemed to be ok. Brian (DH nephew) uses snowblower. Need to make sure snow is removed for school and other folks who use the church. The school schedule is similar to regular school regarding cancellation.
• Philip Chaffee has been helping with snow removal. Carol is not sure that the sexton schedule is conducive to the life of the church. Bathrooms are not clean for Sunday. Sexton here MTW. When we have a weekend event - bathrooms aren’t clean. Thrift shop also finds that bathrooms are dirty.

Spiritual Engagement
• Heifer is underway. The goal is $1000. New initiatives.
• The theme for Lent is darkness and things that grow in the dark.

Food Pantry Issues
Please refer to the email chain that Reverend Beth sent to the cabinet regarding protocol concerns around lack of communication around cancelling the thanksgiving distribution. “Wrists were sufficiently slapped” Bill O’Neil said. “It won’t happen again”.

Anne Malmquist - Food Pantry feels like it is its own entity. Bill confirms that it is its own entity and has its own bank account. Discussion regarding tension between the food pantry and church. Acknowledgement that it’s an important mission. Bill asked for examples for issues. One of which is that people have been turned away from volunteering as stated by Reverend Beth. Bill stated that they have enough volunteers. Request to include all volunteers. Push back against using all volunteers as it may be crowded. Anne reiterates whether this is a good space for the food pantry. We need to make the food pantry work better for everybody. Bill lists issues with moving, such as parking and elevator access. Connie suggests that the Food Pantry needs a Board of Directors, including someone in charge of volunteers. RP spoke with the Town Manager. Since it is the town’s food pantry they do need a Board of Directors. The Food Pantry has grown and needs to act accordingly. Bill - happy to leave if they can get 100 people to help them move. Dave H- suggests to maybe add another day to make it a little easier and open for more volunteers. Bill says - open another day would be a full time job.

More than one day a week would be hard to monitor. It’s a big time commitment. Connie - increase hours on Thursday. We are not the only Food pantry but we are the only one that has shopping privileges. Heather - maybe share location. Discussion about extending hours and the amount of time and effort that goes into organizing the Pantry. The town council would oversee the Food Pantry board. Cedar community center may be open to supporting the food pantry. Bill - Nobody knows what happened to the thermostat on the outside wall. RB - need a line of accountability so things like that don’t happen. Continuing talks regarding coordinating with the town council. Talks about expanding Food Pantry to other locations. RB - not the church’s job to do that outreach. Tommy wants to talk about the Food Pantry with Jack about Cedar Street. Nina will follow up on info regarding the twelve food pantries in Brockton. Bill confirmed that Jack refused to attend the discussion.

Signage
Sent staff and Food Pantry leaders information from the Conference. There may be targeting of food pantries by ICE. Need to use the Private Area signage which requires a signed judicial warrant to enter. The conference needs us to be trained in how to deal with ICE. Nina will reach out to contacts to perhaps assist with a rapid response in case ICE does show up.

Reverend Beth took timestamped photos of the signs. We are to lock doors to private areas if ICE shows up.

The next meeting date is Ash Wednesday. February 25th will be the next Cabinet meeting date.

Closing prayer.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:40 pm.
Next meeting will be February 25th, 2026.

Minutes were approved at the March 18 meeting, as there was no February meeting due to snow.
