STEEPLE SOUNDS

January 2026

We are a Christian community of people who are reaching out to our neighbors,
at home and abroad, sharing our faith and our resources.

Central Square Congregational Church, UCC, of Bridgewater, Massachusetts is an open and affirming
church. No matter who you are, or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here.

From the Desk of Rev. Beth

Rev. Elizabeth Stotts, Pastor

“See, I am doing a new thing.”
— Isaiah 43:19

Entering a new year naturally makes us reflect. We think of the joys and challenges of the past year, prayers answered and prayers still waiting. But here’s the thing we need to remember: God is always at work. Scripture tells us of the promise that God is always doing a “new thing”. This does not mean forgetting the past. It means trusting that God can bring renewal, healing, and purpose out of every season.

I always love hearing about the “new things” God is doing in the lives of those in our church community.  Starting in the December issue, we began a new section of our monthly newsletter where members of our community can share life updates (see "community" below).

Welcoming news and life updates from those in our community is more than simply receiving information—it is an act of listening, respect, and connection. When we open ourselves to the voices and experiences of others, we affirm that every person’s story matters. People’s life updates often carry joys, challenges, hopes, and concerns, and when we read the news, we create space for empathy and understanding. It helps us see beyond our own perspectives and recognize how deeply interconnected we are.

Also, studies show that when people feel heard and valued, they are more likely to share honestly and participate actively. This exchange builds unity, reminding us that progress and healing often begin with awareness. Even difficult news can inspire compassion and action, encouraging us to support one another and work toward positive change.

Ultimately, my prayer is that this “new thing” nurtures a sense of belonging in each of us. It reminds us that we are not isolated individuals but part of a larger whole, responsible for one another’s well-being. Through openness and care, we help create a community rooted in respect, shared responsibility, and hope.

Praise God from Whom all blessings flow!

In Christ,
Rev. Beth

What's The Big Deal About Name Tags

We would love to see everyone wearing nametags. “Why?”, you may ask. You may think that everyone "knows your name" and they very well might. But on any given Sunday, a visitor could be in our midst, among other things. We like what AI had to say about it: "Name tags in churches are a simple tool to build community, welcome guests, and ease social awkwardness by helping people connect names to faces, especially when members are new, fostering easier conversations, identifying staff/volunteers, and creating better fellowship opportunities. They reduce embarrassment from forgetting names, promote inclusivity, and can even offer ministry/service roles in their distribution, making newcomers feel seen and valued." Wearing your nametag is an outreach ministry.

Key Benefits

Fellowship & Connection: Breaks down barriers, making it easier to talk to unfamiliar people and build relationships.
Welcoming Guests: Helps visitors know who to approach and helps existing members greet newcomers warmly.
Reduces Awkwardness: Prevents embarrassment from forgetting names, allowing confident interaction.
Identifies Roles: Makes staff, ushers, and greeters easily recognizable for assistance.
Creates Service Opportunities: Distributing and managing name tags offers ways for more people to get involved.
For Leaders: Helps leaders remember names and details about congregants, improving ministry.

Regardless of our church size, in summary the name tag is:
• practical;
• a low-cost solution for enhancing communication and community in any church size;
• helpful in creating a more personal and welcoming environment for everyone.

The Congregational Engagement Team will be promoting updating your name tag, refreshing it to reflect who you are, however that comfortably defines you and making sure that it is available for you to wear each and every Sunday. So give it some thought - you have a name and so let's share it with everyone.

Carol Chaffee, Care Team

December was a busy month at Kids Church! We talked about the story of the birth of Jesus then we got roles and prepared for the Kids Church Pageant, presented during worship on December 21! The kids all performed amazingly and our two readers, Sam and Liam, did a great job reading. Huge thanks as always to Ashley Earp and Diana Francis for helping direct the kids and getting them all into costumes.

This month we start Heifer! For those that are new or have not been around the church at this time of year, it is the time of year we raise money for Heifer International. The kids will learn about how Heifer raises money to send animals to small farms of those most in need around the world. This will all culminate in our Living Gift Market that will take place on February 8th, following worship. In the lead up to the market, the kids will be working on crafts to sell and thinking of animal-themed food creations. Krissy Cannizzo will be leading the kids in Heifer and it truly is one of the kids' favorite sections we do in Kids Church.

Hope everyone had a safe and joyous Christmas and holiday season!

Did you know Youth and Families can be Ushers and Greeters, Too?

These small commitment/big impact roles are available throughout the year, and youth and families are welcome to volunteer as well. Whether for one Sunday, or once a month, ushers and greeters, are needed to create a helpful and welcoming experience for all who come through our doors. Contact the church office, or speak to someone in one of those roles on Sunday for more information about how you can participate.

For more information, contact the church office at office@csccucc.com or 508-697-6016.

Women of the church and our community are invited to come to the next Women’s Guild meeting on January 7th at 6:30pm for some games and socialization in the cold start of winter! Get out of the house and have some refreshments and laughs while getting to know everyone better. Our business meeting will be fun planning our March wedding and bridal fashion show! We need your ideas for planning and advertising our March program!

In December, the Women’s Guild supported Josie’s Village with the donations filling the table below. Leslee Barboza sponsors this nonprofit which benefits elderly shut-ins and the residents of Life Care of West Bridgewater. Mauree Bundock and Beth Basler, our Material AIDS co-chairs, delivered the donations to Leslee (pictured with Mauree and Beth). They were selected by resident need, wrapped and delivered by Christmas! Thank you to all our members who brought smiles to those at Christmas!

It’s that time of year again. Weather occasionally interferes with our ability to safely hold events and worship services here at CSCC, so be sure to familiarize yourself with the inclement weather policy, a link to which is on the home page of our website (csccucc.org).

Closure notifications will be made via Facebook, text alert, and email, and will be indicated on the home page of the website as well as on the church phone voicemail.
